Young Person of the Year- Idris Akinbanjo

The future awards 2012 have come and gone! But, interestingly this years edition had a whole lot of nominees in most of the categories unlike the previous editions. For those that did not know, The Future Awards season 7 was hosted by Rivers State Government, in Port Harcourt and held on Sunday, August 26, 2012.

Obviously, the stakes were higher as a few categories where introduced, like "The Best Use of New Media" which had "GIDI TRAFFIC" clinching the award, beating 9 others to it.

Surprisingly, my dear LINDA IKEJI, the sole administrator of the ever popular lindaikeji.blogspot.com and unarguably one of the finest blogger of our time, did not win an award! I honestly thought she deserves the award for young person of the year, but, the judges and may be, just may be, the online voters too, did not share my opinion. Well, its all good.

At age 17, she positioned herself as a force to reckon with in women tennis, as she defeated world No. 1 Martina Hingis in the U.S. Open final in 1999. She made it back to the U.S. Open final in 2001 but lost to her elder sister, Venus in straight sets. 

From 2002 through 2003, she won four consecutive Grand Slam singles titles (2002 French Open, 2002 Wimbledon, 2002 U.S Open, 2003 Australian Open), a feat that was dubbed the "Serena Slam".

 Asides Maureen Connoly, Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf, she was the fifth woman to hold all four titles simultaneously.

She has again cliched herself yet another prestigious prize, an Olympic Medal Gold - at the ongoing Olympics, today, Saturday, August 3, 2012, by demolishing Maria Sharapova of Russia, 6-0, 6-1.

Sharapova was clearly no match for the 31 year old American.
