Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday, February 18, 2012 when a (33,000 litre capacity) Tanker full of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) which was coming from Cele – Ijesha and headed towards Mile 2 crashed into one of the loops along Mile 2 bridge resulting to a terrible fire outbreak.
It appeared the tanker’s (Reg. No. XB 370 ATN) brakes failed and the driver lost control and upon trying very hard to bring the truck to a halt, collided and caused mayhem in the area. It has been reported that well over 30 vehicles were burnt including some transport companies vehicles, and many lives lost.
